In 2018, SASS will be re-allocating the SASS Sanctioned Regional structure as a result of numerous factors happening in the world of Cowboy Action Shooting and SASS today.

A Regional reallocation directly impacts all SASS members and the clubs. As such, rather than SASS arbitrarily deciding what the 2018 (and beyond) structure will be, I would greatly appreciate your feedback.

There are 2 options to consider for the structure for 2018.

Please review BOTH options in detail. You will find that each allocation has its individual merits. You will find a map image of each option directly below.

OPTION A - Image (CLICK HERE for a Downloadable/Print COPY)

OPTION B - Image (CLICK HERE for a Downloadable/Print COPY)

The Miakka Misfits needs to submit it's vote by November 1st so please send me an email This email address is being protected from spambots. The only difference to our region is that in Option B, Kentucky is in our region and in Option A, Kentucky is not in our region.  Some of the other regions have larger differences.

Below is a post from Misty at SASS Headquarters with answers to questions that have come up:

Good morning!

I've received numerous requests for additional information regarding the reallocation of the Regional structure for 2018- and I see you all have questions too!

While we made every attempt to address concerns surrounding Regional allocation in 2014, there were additional factors that have arisen in the last year that were unavoidable and needed to be addressed. So, rather than making just a few changes here and there, we decided to do a complete examination of all existing regions and Regional Championships- working toward a reallocation in which the members voices could be heard in the process- prior to a decision being made.

  1. Why the need for the reallocation? What are the “factors” you refer to?
    1. The dissolution of the Central Region & Central Divisional Championship (Sparta/US Open)
    2. Missouri members requesting to be included in the Southwest Region
    3. Mississippi members requesting to be included in the Southeast Region
    4. An overall declining member numbers
    5. Declining numbers in attendance at some Regional matches (a dilution of the program)
    6. The Northeast Regional was abruptly cancelled by its hosts in 2016
    7. 2016 will mark the final year of the Southeast Regional at Givhan’s Ferry (per the hosts)
    8. Petitions to reinstate the High Plains Region
    9. Improved Regional Sponsorship success with fewer, better attended events
  1. Where will the Regional Championships be held once the reallocation is determined?

Regional Championships have been awarded to clubs that have a track record of proven successful events. Historically, an existing organized match becomes a Regional- when the club and facilities have the resources, manpower, and support to host an event of this caliber.

In the proposed reallocation, there is the possibility of the elimination of either 1 or 2 Regions; meaning the elimination of those Regional Championships. The club’s hosting those matches will likely continue to host amazing events- the event simply won’t be the Regional Championship.

Once the Regions are determined, we will be “open” to proposals from any club/host range in each Region who is interested in hosting the Regional Championship for their Region. Existing Regional championships that have a proven successful track record will be given priority.

All TG’s will receive additional information regarding how to prepare a proposal for a Regional Championship to distribute to the clubs in their Region that have an interest in applying for a Regional Championship.

I hope this helps.

Shamrock Sadie provided information regarding new rule changes and clarifications that have just gone into effect from the TG Meeting at End of Trail along with some observations at the match.  Thanks to Shamrock Sadies for the update:

We are back from End of Trail and the work week is over. So I have unpacked my notes from the EOT TG meeting and compiled them here for everyone to review. The discussions covered reminders of rules, some clarifications, and rule changes. The rule changes/clarifications are effective now (actually started for the main match at EOT).

  • Hats: Classic Cowboy/Cowgirl and B-Western (ladies and men) are required to wear hats on their heads, not hanging by a stampede from your string or anywhere else.
  • Carrying of shot shell ammo: Cannot carry ammo on holsters for later use. It is considered illegally acquired ammo.
  • Starting in a faulted position: ROI, p. 6, 5.f. (Timer Operator): “The Timer Operator never starts a competitor in a faulted position or location. It is not considered a faulted position or location for allowing a shooter to start without appropriately loaded guns or available ammunition on their person.”  The decision has been made and a clarification will be addressed in the ROI handbook that failure on the shooter to start in the correct starting position or location will be scored a Procedural, not a reshoot.
  • Safety checks: Unloading table officers should check that they can see the follower to ensure there is no ammo in the magazine (rifle and shotguns). Look for rounds in the magazine and have shooter work the action of a ’97.
  • Standing upright: If shooter is to start with hands on hat or other stance, they must remain standing upright until after the beep, unless stage instructions indicate otherwise.
  • B-Western pistol style: B-Western shooters can change their pistol shooting style in the middle of the pistol string.
  • Wild Bunch: Shooters can shoot Henry Big Boy rifles now.

Observations I saw on the range:  We shot 16 warm-up stages and of course shot the 12 main match stages. There were 20 shooters and 5 instructors for the Doily Gang clinic. During each of these events, I observed some rules that were not clear to shooters or forgotten.

  • Ammo belts: SHB, p. 11, (Holsters, Cartridge Belts, and Bandoleers): “Ammo belts must be worn so allammo is positioned at or below the belly button.” If ammo is used from a belt that is not worn according to rules, then it is scored as a Procedural along with a miss for each round that hits a target.
  • Checking for edge hits: Some spotters refused to walk down range to check edge hits when a TO and another spotter saw edge hits.
  • Cross-draw twist: Though a twist is not required, some cross-draw shooters broke the 170 when pulling and holstering pistols. They were given warnings anddidstart twisting after the warning, so no penalty was called.
  • Not holstering pistols at the end of the shooting string: This is a Procedural when not holstered before shooting next firearm.Definition: “Shooting string: shots from one type of firearm prior to use of the next type of firearm engaged.”

The July Match results have been posted to the website. It was a great day for the match as we again beat the rains but the clouds and wind helped with the heat.  Everyone had a great time.  The stages must have been a bit tougher as there were no clean shooters today.  Congratulations to overall winner Jeff Shelleen.  We again had no lady shooters this month.  The summer heat must be keeping the lady shooters away.
